Series "Rech o Rossii"
In the modern world, household items are replaced by one another faster and faster. This book will tell about the things that faithfully served people throughout the 20th century, and now occupy a place not only in storage rooms and attics, but also in museums. The reader will learn how water was heated in a samovar, washed with a valkom, and ironed with a rubel, what a chapelnik and a "zhulik" cartridge are for, and how the metal balls from a bed and steel feathers can be used in boys' games.
The author of the book, Leonid Vasilyevich Belovinsky, is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, a professor, and the author of many books on the history of everyday life, material culture, and Soviet life. He tells the history of things as the history of the development of human thought, as the history of the country, and as his own personal history, mostly taking place in the 20th century. The book is accompanied by a "portrait gallery" of things — drawings by Kristina Valenkova. Photographs from the Central State Archive of Film, Photo and Sound Documents, the Russia Today agency, and private family archives are used in the design. Most of the photographs are published for the first time.
