Once, Grandma Pellegrina gave her granddaughter Abilene a wonderful toy rabbit named Edward Tulane. He was made of the finest porcelain, had a whole wardrobe of exquisite silk outfits, and even a gold pocket watch on a chain. Abilene adored her rabbit, kissed him, dressed him up, and wound his watch every morning. And the rabbit loved no one but himself.
One day, Abilene went on a sea voyage with her parents, and the rabbit Edward fell overboard and ended up at the very bottom of the ocean. An old fisherman fished him out and brought him to his wife. Then the rabbit fell into the hands of different people—kind and cruel, noble and devious. Edward faced many trials, but the harder his lot, the more his cold heart began to thaw: he learned to return love for love.
The author of "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane," Kate DiCamillo, began her career writing books in the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" series, but it was her children's books that brought her worldwide acclaim and numerous awards, including the All American Children's Association's gold medal "Parents' Choice" and the "Newbery Medal" for her special contribution to children's literature. Russian readers came to know DiCamillo through the wonderful story of the cheerful mutt Winn-Dixie.
