Every new generation of children must sooner or later learn that bread doesn't grow on trees. So where does it come from? Anatoly Mityayev (1924-2008) - a good children's writer and editor-in-chief of "Murzilka" - wrote an educational book about the long journey of bread - from a sprout in the field to a loaf on the table.
The book contains seemingly insignificant but useful information - historical, agricultural, folkloric, cultural: about a grain of bread, plowing, sowing, harvesting, milling, preparing dough; about wonderful people - farmers and agronomist scientists; about the design of a plow, harrow, combine harvester and other agricultural machinery…
The real gem of the book is the unusual selection of proverbs, sayings and riddles related to the theme of bread.
All this "agri-popular science" could have turned out to be dry, crackling text, "educational mandatory reading", but the author's surprisingly caring, lyrical, empathetic tone, as well as his vast erudition, turn reading into a fascinating process of learning. And the structure of the book - short stories - helps with instant memorization and assimilation of information.
The book reproduces Boris Kyshtymov's illustrations from the first edition. The current, second edition is being released twenty-five years later in a new edition.
The book is recommended for younger schoolchildren, as well as their parents and primary school teachers. Indispensable for writing reports and creating presentations.
For younger and middle school ages.
