Perhaps everyone knows the tale of a lost mitten or pot in which forest animals decided to make themselves a home. This is exactly the plot that lay at the heart of the fairy tale by American writer and illustrator Jan Brett, "The Mitten." Little Nikolak asked his grandmother to knit him white mittens, and his grandmother warned him that such mittens are easy to lose in the snow, which is exactly what happens. And of course, the animals crowd in one by one into the new little home, until a little mouse settles on the bear's nose...
In the design of the book, Jan Brett uses elements of traditional Ukrainian red-and-black patterns and vignettes, while the illustrations themselves seem to decorate the walls of the hut.
As always with Jan Brett, each animal is endowed with its own character and individuality. A rare artist manages to convey the mood so talentfully and accurately.
