From the Author "I wrote this book over exactly seven years while Lola—the book's main character and my daughter—was growing up. As I prepared for the role of stepmother and navigated the first three years of living with my husband's children and our own child, I went to therapy, read countless books, and sought answers to hundreds of questions. How should I answer a child's question about whom I love more? How can I deal with my anger toward my husband's children from his first marriage? And so on. Every such conversation felt like walking through a minefield because someone could explode. And then others would join in. We split into camps, remaining silent for weeks or, on the contrary, shouting at each other."
