"Karamzin is our first historian and our last chronicler..." – such was A. S. Pushkin's definition of the great enlightener, writer, and historian N. M. Karamzin. The famous "History of the Russian State", all twelve volumes of which are included in this book, became a major event in the country's social life, an era in the study of our past. As an appendix to it, "A Note on Ancient and New Russia", which had been under an unofficial ban for almost two centuries, is also published here. The edition is richly illustrated – primarily with engravings from the extremely rare album "Picturesque Karamzin", published back in Pushkin's time.
