Bulat Okudzhava's (1924-1997) autobiographical novella "Be Healthy, Schoolboy" and short stories ("The Morning Paints with Tender Light", "Music Lessons") continue the "Samokat" "war" series.
The series title - "How It Was" - explains the publisher's intent: to tell about the Great Patriotic War honestly and objectively - as far as possible. Honesty is guaranteed by the names of the authors: these are Russian front-line writers, eyewitnesses of what is described, people with an impeccable personal and creative reputation. Objectivity, we hope, will be ensured by the "scholarly apparatus": in each book of the series, the work of fiction is supplemented by an article by a historian, presenting the modern view of the events described.
The novella "Be Healthy, Schoolboy" - about a young man who went to the front straight from the school bench. About the war - as it really was, and as young romantics imagined it.
The book is supplemented by articles by Olga Rosenblum, Associate Professor of the Department of Contemporary Russian Literature at the Institute of Philology and History of the Russian State University for the Humanities, author of the recently published book "Waiting for a Big Change. Biography, Poetry and Prose of Bulat Okudzhava" (RSUH, 2013), and historian Stanislav Dudkin, already familiar to readers from previous books in the series.
For middle and high school ages.
