How long is that – a verst, a sazhene, an arshin, "seven spans in the forehead"? Feet, yards, inches – why do the English use different units of length from us? How tall were Thumbelina and the Pony? The author of the book will help find the answers to these questions and teach you how to measure the length of objects with your fingers and feet, elbows, iron boots, thrown spears, fired arrows, and also with the help of such a unique tool as a "bull's bellow".

About the author

Mikhail Pegov. "I live where two great Russian rivers, the Volga and the Oka, meet – in the ancient city of Nizhny Novgorod. Nizhny is my home; I was born here in 1968. It was a year of extraordinary solar activity, as they say – the "year of the restless sun". Perhaps that is why I prefer very, very, very hot summers to winter, spring, and autumn.

Since childhood, I have dreamed of being a historian and a writer, and when I finished school, I entered the university's Faculty of History and Philology. Later, I graduated from another university – an economics college – but I still enjoy being a writer more.

I love to travel – on foot, by boat, by car. I love the beautiful Volga, long walks in the forest, cats, solitude, and, of course, my son, for whom I once wrote my first short stories".
