Uncle Montague lives in an old, strange house beyond the woods, and the only thing that disturbs his solitude are visits from his nephew. It is to him that Uncle Montague tells his terrifying stories, which are either made up or actually happened to Uncle Montague himself when he was younger. The more details we learn, the more likely we are to think that all the characters really existed and that all the stories are based on real events.

This is what the author himself says about the book
"Scary Stories" is a collection of short, eerie stories, each with its own narrator. As we read, we gradually learn more about the narrator and his listeners. Each of the stories is set in the past—in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the setting of many classic English ghost stories."
