Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp was an outstanding Russian philologist and professor at Leningrad University. He was one of the founders of the structural-typological approach in folklore studies, which later found wide application in literary studies. V. Y. Propp's works on folklore ("Morphology of the Folktale", "The Historical Roots of the Fairy Tale", "Russian Heroic Epic", "Russian Agrarian Festivals") have become part of the golden fund of 20th-century world science.
In his books on the fairy tale, V. Y. Propp rejects traditional approaches to studying the phenomena of oral folk art and first turns to analyzing the structural elements of the genre, and then to its origins, establishing a typological similarity between the fairy tale and initiation rites.
