Seven-year-old Madicken lives in a big red house by the river. She believes there is no better place in the whole world. Her mother and father live there too, along with their helper, Alva, and little Pims, who follows her older sister everywhere. Wherever one goes, the other follows. They always have fun together. And how could they not? There is so much interesting to do: they can swim, go on the swings, play croquet, tend the garden, and feed the hedgehog milk!
And yet how difficult it is to be a well-behaved girl! Madicken and Pims simply cannot manage it! They are both quick to mischief: one moment they will fall into the ice hole, the next they will put a pea up their nose. But one day something happened that is frightening even to remember…
For middle school age.

The events described in this book are very similar to those that happened in Astrid Lindgren's own childhood. She even gave one of the characters her own habits and personality traits. The book is filled with humor and subtle irony, which turn even the most ordinary episodes into a captivating story.
