Inventive thinking in the Soviet Union developed in a peculiar way. It was encouraged in selected fields—space, military, science—and practically ignored in everyday life. In other words, we made major breakthroughs in rocketry and fundamental research, but seriously lagged behind in everything related to daily life, from vacuum cleaners to automobiles. This book has two goals. The first is to tell the story of inventions made by our compatriots during the Soviet period as objectively as possible, neither downplaying nor exaggerating their achievements; the second is to show invention in the USSR in a context that explains its unique path. And yes, of course—to dispel the many myths surrounding the history of invention.
