Connecticut, 1830s. Thirteen-year-old P. T. Heliodorus, a stable boy's son, a dreamer and a fantasist, inherits Nickel Island from his father—a piece of land that Heliodorus the Elder always called a kingdom and himself a king. Since childhood, P. T. has dreamed of his future domain and a grand title, imagining how he would lift his entire family out of poverty and spare them from sorrow. But disappointment awaits the heir: Nickel Island is not a kingdom at all, but a patch of land in the marshes where all the persecuted and outcasts have found refuge. Sensitive, compassionate, and enterprising, P. T. Heliodorus decides to take care of his subjects and, with their help, fulfill his cherished dream: to open a theater of wonders with spectacular illusions.
