Ben had never received such an extraordinary letter: it looked as though it had come straight from the era of Sherlock Holmes, and it had been delivered by… bees! Inside the wax-sealed envelope was a small invitation card signed: "Come for an hour." Come? To the Garner-Guy Museum? But Ben had never even heard of it! And online there was only its ancient website—as if the museum had long since closed. And it really might soon cease to exist. Only Ben can save it—with the help of the museum’s own magical exhibits, which are in no way willing to end up in the trash or gather dust in the storerooms of some ultra-modern scientific complex. A series of discoveries awaits the ten-year-old hero, each one more astonishing than the last. Among them is the unraveling of his father’s family secret.
This detective story, created and illustrated by Helen Cooper (born in 1963), is written in the spirit of gothic novels. The young hero must figure out why the mysterious invitation was brought to him, what secrets the museum’s halls conceal, and above all—why he saw a hippopotamus in his dream.
Helen Cooper’s books have been translated into 26 languages and have received numerous awards, but they had never been published in Russian before. The writer and artist has been awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal twice, presented by the British Library Association. Helen lives in Oxford in a house with a concert grand piano and loves to make sketches in museums. It was from such sketches that the novel "Somewhere There Are Hippopotamuses" was born. For Russian-speaking readers, it is being introduced by the renowned translators Galina Gimon and Olga Bukhina.
For middle school age.
