The name of the little heroine of this book has long since become a common noun. Who hasn't heard their mother say affectionately in childhood, "Oh, you, Masha the scatterbrain!" and admonishingly, "You need to put your things away, or you'll have to look for them!" What can you do, all children are a little scatterbrains... But even adults sometimes have unfortunate losses! Perhaps that is why both adult and young readers enjoy this instructive, yet funny and heartwarming story, told by the wonderful writer Lyubov Voronkova.

The bright and vivid illustrations for this book, like childhood itself, were drawn by the wonderful graphic artist Mikhail Belomlinsky. Many today's mothers and fathers will surely remember his wonderful illustrations for J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit", D. Darrell's "The Talking Turkey", and M. Twain's "Yankee in King Arthur's Court".
