O. Henry dreamed of travel from childhood and ran away from home at the age of ten, intending to devote himself to whaling, but he was brought back and forced to earn a living in odd jobs. It was only toward the end of his life that he realized his calling was literature, as evidenced by his brilliant stories, extraordinarily expressive, witty, and satirical. They embodied his inexhaustible love of adventure and distant travels.
