Eragon

The first book in the tetralogy. In the magical forests of his native Alagaësia, a village boy named Eragon finds a blue stone of extraordinary beauty. He intends to sell it to help his family survive the winter. To his amazement, the stone turns out to be an egg from which hatches a magnificent dragon, whom he names Saphira. One night, the life of this ordinary boy is turned upside down when dark forces inhabiting the kingdom brutally attack his family. From an old storyteller named Brom, Eragon learns of his special destiny—he is a Dragon Rider. However, the powerful and treacherous King Galbatorix, who was also once a Dragon Rider, knows of this as well, and he is prepared to kill everything in his path to remain the ruler of his captive Alagaësia. Eragon and Saphira are the kingdom's last hope for salvation from the power of evil.
