American wildlife writer Ernest Seton-Thompson (1860-1946) was one of the first to make animals and birds the heroes of his works. Perhaps it was he who initiated a new, realistic direction in animal literature, as no one before had depicted their behavior and habits so truthfully and authentically. His first book of short stories about the lives of wild animals became so popular that it set the tone for the writer's entire subsequent body of work. He not only knew his heroes well but loved them and, most importantly, understood them.
The books in this series contain introductory articles that will help prepare for literature lessons. The articles introduce the lives and works of classic writers, help readers understand how they worked and what inspired them, and also provide an overview of their literary legacy.
For middle school students.
