Many of us have known bicycles since childhood. We ride them to work and use them to carry cargo, set records, and travel around the world. Bicycles can be found almost everywhere. In some countries, there are more bicycles than people. They are so commonplace that we rarely think about how and when they were invented. Yet they are a relatively recent invention—a fine illustration of the technological progress of recent centuries and, to some extent, one of the driving forces behind it. Simple in appearance, the bicycle incorporates the most advanced technological achievements—from vulcanized rubber and ball bearings to carbon fiber and computer-aided aerodynamics.
Every time we look at a bicycle, we admire its elegant simplicity, which, upon closer inspection, reveals the fruits of the work of countless people. This book provides a brief but vivid account of the history of the bicycle, its evolution, its impact on society, and the main elements of its design.
The history of the bicycle is a story of the most advanced technological achievements, a revolution in thinking, and a transformation of the face of cities.
