When Kara Westfall was five years old, her mother was convicted of the worst of all crimes – witchcraft. Now Kara and her younger brother Tuff still live in the village, where it is believed that there is nothing more evil and terrible than magic... But more than magic, they fear the mysterious Enchanted Forest that covers almost the entire island. It has many names, and the villagers live in fear of the dense thickets and terrible creatures that dwell there.
When Kara turns twelve, a magical bird lures her into the forest thicket, and she discovers a magical grimoire there that once belonged to her mother. Kara discovers a special gift of witchcraft in herself. But Grace, the village mayor's daughter, finds out her secret and threatens to tell everyone that Kara is a witch!
