"The Nutcracker, or The Mouse King" by German storyteller E. T. A. Hoffmann is a romantic story about loyalty, love, and devotion. For Christmas, Marie and her brother receive a toy, a wooden Nutcracker, and learn its story from their godfather. It turns out that the Nutcracker is none other than an enchanted prince. He can regain his former human form only if he defeats the Mouse King, and most importantly, if a beautiful girl loves the Nutcracker despite his ugliness.
