It is Samuil Marshak’s most popular work, measured by the number of editions. The phrase “the scatterbrain from Basseynaya Street” immediately became a popular idiom and remains one of them to this day, although Basseynaya Street no longer exists in Saint Petersburg (it was renamed Nekrasov Street).

The main character was based on the Soviet physical chemist I. A. Kablukov, who was famous for his impracticality and absentmindedness. But some of Marshak’s contemporaries saw traits of the author himself in the “scatterbrain.”

The plot of the book is well known: a scatterbrain from the Leningrad street of Basseynaya dresses in completely unsuitable clothes, then goes to the railway station and sits in a detached carriage for two days, believing that the train is taking him to Moscow. Unlike Marshak’s other characters, who whittle, saw, deliver mail, and fight fires, this one is not assigned any work at all.

The image of the “scatterbrain” is rather satirical, but thanks to Aminadav Kanevsky’s illustrations, he appears as a cute and charming eccentric. Moreover, Marshak’s “scatterbrain” hero looks very much like the author—this is exactly how Marshak looked in the 1930s; this is the kind of briefcase full of manuscripts he carried to work.

The book’s educational value is undeniable. The hero’s deliberately absurd actions and the “upside-down” situations amuse young readers. After all, they already have some modest life experience and know that a frying pan is not a piece of clothing and that gloves are not worn on your feet. In essence, “The Scatterbrain from Basseynaya Street” helps children develop a proper sense of what is normal, teaching them to be organized, calm, and sensible, otherwise they might do a hundred foolish things. It is also important to listen to others and sometimes ask for advice. After all, people answered the main character’s questions, but he only heard himself.

Recommended for reading aloud to children by adults.

The “scatterbrain from Basseynaya Street” formula has taken on a life of its own, separate from Marshak’s poem; it has entered the speech of people from all walks of life and the minds of many generations, becoming part of the Russian language. And the eccentric hero’s ridiculous antics continue to delight today’s children, just as they delighted his first readers—the children of 1930. Other literary characters of that era—in cars, trains, and airplanes—never managed to escape the confines of their time, but Marshak’s “scatterbrain” in his detached carriage has made it all the way to our time and is rolling along just fine.

Petrovsky M. The sequel to “The Seven Crystal Balls” was first published in magazine format (the weekly Tintin, 1946–1947), from which Hergé removed more than 300 panels for the 1949 standalone book edition, believing they merely weighed down the narrative. In addition, the magazine version used the so-called Italian format, which was wider than it was tall, greatly altering the approach to panel layout. However, several years ago, the magazine version (in a deluxe edition, on “vintage” paper) was also released as a standalone album. It is believed that one of Hergé’s main sources of inspiration for “The Temple of the Sun” was Gaston Leroux’s (1868–1927) adventure novel “The Bride of the Sun” (L’Épouse du soleil, 1912).

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0174/8041/7334/files/tintin-tome-14temple-soleil_cover_1200.jpg?v=1712355780
скипетр-оттокара
Ottokar's Sceptre

Author Hergé
Artist Hergé
Format Hardcover
Number of pages 64
Age 7-10 years, 11-14 years
ISBN 978-5-00041-533-7
Series The Adventures of Tintin
Translated by Mikhail Khachaturov
Publisher: Melik-Pashaev

Tintin meets Professor Alectrix, an expert in sigillography – the study of seals. It is no wonder that its atmosphere is imbued with anxiety: the author, like the entire population of tiny Belgium, could not help but be troubled by the events in neighboring Germany. By this time, Hergé had already realized that under the current circumstances it was best to avoid specifics and choose fictional countries as settings – a device successfully employed in "The Broken Ear". There, to their astonishment, they learn that Professor Tournesol is working on creating an atomic engine for the first manned spaceflight in human history. But the most stunning news is yet to come: it turns out the professor intends to go to the Moon himself! What's more, he asks Tintin and Captain Haddock to accompany him on this journey. The friends begin preparing for the flight, but things do not go smoothly. Then, a leak of secret data occurs, and it becomes clear that despite the strictest security measures, a traitor is operating within the Centre!

The theme of space had long fascinated Hergé, who always had a keen interest in science. After two consecutive successful diologies, "The Pirates" and "The Inca", the artist did not want to change such a successful format, both creatively and commercially, especially since his latest idea turned out to be too ambitious for a single volume. On the other hand, Hergé knew full well that it was unthinkable to begin bringing it to life without thorough preparation, so no other story had required the author to immerse himself so deeply in the subject. The scientific side of the lunar journey had to appear as realistic as possible on the pages of the album, but at the same time not become a drag for the reader, hindering them from following the development of the plot, because it was Hergé's readability that he valued above all else, ruthlessly cutting out anything superfluous. Besides, "The Adventures of Tintin" are, first and foremost, adventures, and humorous ones at that! This means they should not only teach, but also entertain, delight, amuse, and astonish... Hence the author's desire to compensate for the technical complexity of some of the dialogues with strikingly simple visual solutions. Take, for example, the lunar rocket, whose shape and (especially!) colour scheme make it look more like a toy than a spacecraft! However, even here, the future revealed Hergé's remarkable foresight: very soon this rocket would become not only the most recognisable visual image of the series and a hugely popular souvenir, but also one of the main symbols of the ninth art as a whole. Let's also mention another important point. How many spacecraft can we remember that any child could draw in just a couple of minutes? Perhaps a bit crookedly, perhaps roughly (say, confusing the number of red-and-white squares on the hull), but recognisable!

Preparatory work on the lunar adventure of Tintin and his friends began as early as the mid-1940s, but the first publication in Tintin magazine did not appear until March 1950. The album "Destination Moon" was published in 1953. In total, working on the diology took Hergé more than four years and cost him a deep depression and nervous and physical exhaustion. The realities of the time no longer left comic book authors any room for even the slightest approximation: everything had to look as plausible as possible. Carrying out such a task alone was absolutely impossible, so from the very beginning Hergé surrounded himself with assistants—both for the scientific and scriptwriting aspects, and for the artistic ones, which we will discuss in a little more detail. Edgar P. Jacobs, who had made a huge contribution to the visual appeal of several previous albums, gradually switched to his own series, "The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer", which almost immediately became a bestseller, and as a result, his work with Hergé soon came to an end. However, the author of Tintin was once again very lucky: Jacobs was replaced by another young and incredibly talented Belgian artist (and future classic), Bob de Moor (1925–1992), who would remain a loyal companion to the master until the very end. Let's also mention the involvement (primarily in scriptwriting) of another famous Belgian comic artist, Albert Uderkoen (1922–2011). Thus, during the process of working on the lunar diology, the "Hergé Studio" was formed, which was officially registered on April 6, 1950, a week after the publication of the first part of the two-volume work.

Also read:

First Steps on the Moon
The Secret of the Unicorn
The Treasure of Red Rackham
The Black Island

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0174/8041/7334/files/tintin-tome-09objectif-lune_cover_1200.jpg?v=1712355796
первые-шаги-по-луне
First Steps on the Moon

Author Hergé
Artist Hergé
Binding type Hardcover
Number of pages 64
Age 7-10 years, 11-14 years
ISBN 978-5-00041-542-9
Series The Adventures of Tintin
Translated by Mikhail Khachaturov
Publisher: Melik-Pashaev

The launch of a lunar rocket took place at the Centre for Atomic Research in Sildavian Sbroe, with Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, Professor Tournesol, and Engineer Wolf on board. Risking his life, the brave reporter Tintin investigates mysterious incidents, but emerges victorious from every predicament. And whatever happens, his faithful friend is always by his side—Snowy, a pure white fox terrier.

Hergé conceived the idea of a space adventure in the mid-1940s, and it turned out to be so ambitious that he decided to once again use the diptych format that had proven itself so successful in two previous stories—the “pirate” and “Inca” adventures. The first part of Tintin's lunar journey, “Destination Moon,” was published in 1950 in Tintin magazine, and in 1953 it was released as a standalone album. In 1954, the final part of the diptych, “First Steps on the Moon,” was published, becoming nothing short of prophetic.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0174/8041/7334/files/tintin-tome-10marche-lune_cover_1200.jpg?v=1712355869
на-старт-внимание-марш-в-кровать
Ready, set, get in bed!

Author: Daniel Knapp
Illustrator: Daniel Knapp
Publisher: Melik-Pashaev
Series: For the Very Young
ISBN: 978-5-00041-555-9
Pages: 32 (Offset)
Cover type: softcover
Illustrations: Color
Dimensions: 260 × 210 × 5 mm

Getting a child to go to bed on time is no easy task. The growing international tensions could not fail to affect the author's thoughts and moods, so the introduction of a spy theme into the plot seems entirely natural: no wonder many critics call "The Calculus Affair" the most cinematic album in the series, comparing it to the films of Alfred Hitchcock and Carol Reed. However, Hergé by no means intended to create a spy thriller in the vein of "The 39 Steps" or "The Man Who Knew Too Much", so he infused this volume with a good deal of humor, making it related not so much to Hitchcock as to Billy Wilder. Strangely enough, this volume, which is arguably the most suspenseful in the series, also became one of the funniest: the book is literally bursting with gags, both visual (take the "great bandage journey", for example!) and textual (just think of the police chief of the border airport's spectacular monologue). An interesting fact: "The Calculus Affair" is one of the few Tintin adventures (completed ones, excluding the first volumes of the di-logues) in which the hero does not leave continental Europe.

Also read:

Destination Moon
First on the Moon
The Sceptre of Ottokar
The Seven Crystal Balls

Author Hergé
Artist Hergé
Format Hardcover
Number of pages 64
Age 7-10 years, 11-14 years
ISBN 978-5-00041-557-3
Series The Adventures of Tintin
Translated by Mikhail Khachaturov
Publisher: Melik-Pashaev

Dimensions 290 × 217 × 10 mm

While resting in the mountains, Tintin receives a letter from his Chinese friend Chan, who writes that he will soon fly to London and they will finally be able to see each other after a long separation. Drowning in the snow, the exhausted Chan reached out his hands to Tintin and begged for help. Tintin decides to fly urgently to Kathmandu, to go from there up to the crash site. Of course, Captain Haddock cannot let him go alone…

The publication of the anniversary, 20th volume of "The Adventures of Tintin" in a magazine began in September 1958 and ended in November 1959 (the album version was released in 1960).
The work on another story coincided for the author with a difficult period in his personal life, which cost him deep depression. Hergé was on the verge of a long-overdue, but extremely painful decision to divorce. For him, an extremely conservative person, who above all valued reliability and constancy in relationships, the need to make such a decision looked like a complete catastrophe. Creativity became a haven of safety for Hergé once again: it was no wonder, for he had long ago realized that Tintin was his best psychotherapist.

The original idea for the 20th album came to the author back in the late stages of working on the previous volume ("Red Sea Sharks", 1958): a criminal plot would form the basis, with Nestor, the long-time butler of Marlinspike Castle, as the main character. However, the more Hergé thought about him, the less he liked him. At the same time, a completely different idea came to his mind, which he described in a few words: "Tibetan wisdom – lamas – yeti" (the note has been preserved in the archives – as has the mention that twenty years before this, Hergé had already considered the idea of a "Tibetan" adventure). That seemed to the author to be quite fruitful. All that remained was to find a compelling reason to send his heroes to Tibet. Turnesol was the first to come to the rescue: indeed, why wouldn't the restless professor want to find a yeti and, in doing so, reveal another scientific secret? For this, he could quite well go to Tibet – and his friends would follow him, of course. However, almost immediately Hergé dismissed this idea as completely untenable: Turnesol was too material, too "mathematical" a person to become the main driving force of a story that the author saw not as an ordinary adventure, but rather as a kind of spiritual quest, an initiation. And that was when Hergé remembered Chan, the character from "The Blue Lotus"! The seed of the idea sprouted, the rest was just a matter of technique: painstaking preparatory work began.

The main sources of inspiration for Hergé were the works of Alexandra David-Néel (1868–1969), a French opera singer and tireless researcher of Tibet; the accounts of the first Europeans to conquer the Himalayan peaks – Edmund Hillary (Mount Everest) and Maurice Herzog (Annapurna), as well as the works of Bernard Huppert (1916–2001), one of the pillars (and actual creator) of cryptozoology. Hergé considered it necessary to meet Herzog and Huppert in person, and these acquaintances only strengthened the author's belief in the correctness of the chosen plot. By the way, both of them had no doubt about the existence of the yeti: Herzog claimed to have seen footprints in the snow that could not belong to any known living creature.

"Tintin in Tibet" stands apart in Hergé's work. Almost all Tintinologists consider this album to be the best. It was this one that finally cemented Hergé's status as one of the most significant authors of the 20th century, a testament to which can be considered the never-ending stream of articles, studies, dissertations, philosophical treatises, parodies, and lampoons (how could you forget them!), dedicated to the most diverse aspects of the series, even now, 40 years after the death of Georges Remi. "Tintin in Tibet" is an absolutely intimate, gentle album. It is funny to say that, in essence, there is no conflict in it; moreover – not a single negative character! The number of characters here is reduced to a minimum. At the center of the narrative are three – Tintin, the Captain, and Milou. For the first time in many years, we do not see the Duponts on the pages. Turnesol's appearances can be counted on one hand. There are also almost no references to previous albums and familiar characters that Hergé so loved (except for the all-pervasive voice of Bianca Castafiore, who still broadcasts her eternal "Jewels of the Matinée" to the surrounding area). Nothing – only the blinding whiteness of the endless snows of Tibet, in which the researchers (given the radical changes in the author's personal life) see an allegory of a "blank slate", a new beginning. In other words, "Tintin in Tibet" is an initiation album, an album of immersion (primarily in oneself). Did the same Captain Haddock know, for example, that "in him lives a faith capable of moving mountains"?

Read also:

The Blue Lotus
The Pharaoh's Cigar
The Sun Temple
7 Crystal Balls

Author, Illustrator: Tatyana Gorodentseva
ISBN: 978-5-00041-544-3
Publisher: Melik-Pashaev
Pages: 112
Binding: Hardcover
Format: 170x240 mm

One day at breakfast, Pavlik announced to his parents: "You know, Mom and Dad, I'm not a boy anymore.
